Egg Freezing
You may wish to consider the option of freezing your eggs if:
- You are not in a position to have a child at this time but wish to preserve the possibility for the future; or
- You have been advised that your eggs will be destroyed because you must undergo cancer treatment and require radiation or chemotherapy.
While egg preservation through freezing was fraught with many challenges in the past, these difficulties have now been overcome with a new and rapid process for freezing eggs known as vitrification. Rhonda will direct you to clinics with:
- High egg survival rates with vitrification;
- High fertilization rates for the surviving eggs, and
- High pregnancy rates for women using frozen eggs.
You will also learn about the practicalities of an egg freezing cycle at each clinic. How long will you have to wait for a consult with a physician at each clinic? Which physicians at each clinic can you get an appointment with most quickly? Are there any physicians at the program who are willing to conduct long distance telephone consultations? Approximately how long will it be before you can expect to have an egg freezing cycle at each program? How much time will you have to spend at each clinic if you live out of town? What kind of accommodations are available? Finally, what is the approximate cost of an egg freezing cycle at each clinic?
